News release

Each year, a number of individuals lose their lives or are left with debilitating injuries due to the devastating effects of impaired driving. RCMP NL encourages motorists to be in the know about the various modes and forms of impaired driving before deciding to drive.

Impaired driving involves the operation of a conveyance (a mode of transportation) anywhere in Canada. This includes operation on all roadways (maintained or not), all trails, on the water (inland or ocean) and even on private property.

The legislation includes many forms of transportation such as:

  • Passenger vehicles (cars, trucks, vans, SUVs)
  • Commercial vehicles (Transport Trucks, heavy equipment, delivery vehicles)
  • Off-road vehicles (quads, side-by-sides, dirt bikes and snowmobiles)
  • Vessels (personal water crafts - motorized and non-motorized, boats and fishing vessels)
  • Aircraft
  • Scooters (mobility, electric or motorized)
  • Electric bikes
  • Ride-on lawnmowers

Impaired driving is not limited to alcohol. Various forms of illicit and prescription drugs can impair a motorist's ability to operate a vehicle safely. Those taking prescription medications are responsible to educate themselves on the possible impairing effects of those medications. Discussions with health care providers is strongly recommended. Despite common misconceptions, cannabis has the ability to cause impairment.

RCMP NL continues the enforcement of impaired driving and is equipped to detect all forms of impairment.

If you suspect a person is driving while impaired, please contact 911 or your local police immediately and be prepared to provide the location and description of the vehicle and or driver.

Let's keep our roadways safe for all this summer!
