On February 23, 2022, Yukon RCMP Traffic Services, in collaboration with Yukon Government Highways and Public Works – Carrier Compliance and National Safety Code, conducted a team-oriented enforcement campaign on the Alaska Highway, between the South Klondike Highway and North Klondike Highway.

Operation Corridor enforcement was requested through public engagement. It also aligned with national enforcement and messaging for "Truckers against Trafficking"- a new annual awareness and outreach effort to educate commercial motor vehicle drivers, motor carriers, law enforcement officers and the general public about the crime of human trafficking, the signs to look for and what to do if you suspect someone is being trafficked. Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance selected Feb. 22-24 as the dates for this initiative to coincide with Canada's National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, which is Feb. 22.

During Operation Corridor, vehicles were stopped for proactive checks related to criteria such as licencing and sobriety rather than moving traffic violations such as speeding. Investigators laid 14 charges directly relating to safety checks, Periodic Motor Vehicle Inspection (PMVI) Programs, and non-conforming vehicles.

Traffic stops involving commercial vehicles often take a substantial amount of time. Investigations around cargo securement, logbooks, etc. can take upward of 45 minutes roadside, and more deficiencies can mean longer stops. Deficiencies must be remedied immediately in order to ensure the safety of all road users.

The one-day operation resulted in the following violations:

  • 26 Territorial charges including unregistered and uninsured commercial vehicles;
  • 26 charges against commercially registered vehicles;
  • Eight National Safety Code charges;
  • Seven Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance – Out-of-Service violations;
  • Four Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Restrictions.
  • a one hundred percent violation per contact rate – every vehicle checked was found to be in violation of at least one safety- or driver-related statute or law.

Operation Corridor is a joint enforcement Initiative between the Yukon RCMP Traffic Services and Yukon Government Highways and Public Works - Carrier Compliance Services and National Safety Code with a focus on commercial industry vehicles and transportation safety. These events occur periodically throughout the year, and the overall intent is to promote awareness of the rules and regulations of commercial transportation, identify common occurrences, deficiencies, and infractions, and promote improved road safety for all people who travel our highways and roadways.
