News release

Northeast Nova RCMP Major Crime has charged a man in the homicide of Peter Anthony (Tony) Walsh that occurred in August 2019.

On August 23, 2019, Tony Walsh left a residence in Crowes Mill, Colchester County and was last heard from at 1:20 p.m. that day. The vehicle he was driving was later located in a business parking lot in Truro. The RCMP then began an investigation into his disappearance.

In December 2019, Tony's family appealed to the public for information and investigators continued to receive tips and information as part of this process.

Through the information and evidence collected, investigators determined that Tony was the victim of a homicide and another public appeal was issued by investigators in March 2020.

Since March 2020, RCMP investigators have continued to gather information, collect evidence and follow up on tips and, on June 16, 2022, Northeast Nova RCMP Major Crime arrested a 56-year-old Londonderry man in relation to the homicide.

The RCMP has charged John Alfred Cook, of Londonderry, with First Degree Murder. Cook has been remanded into custody and will appear in Truro Provincial Court on August 2, 2022 at 9:30 a.m.

On June 16, RCMP investigators also located human remains in the Londonderry area. Investigators believe these remains to be those of Tony Walsh based on all of the evidence and information collected. The RCMP's thoughts continue to be with the Walsh family.

investigation has been assisted by numerous partners and agencies, including Colchester County District RCMP, Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit, Halifax District RCMP Major Crime Unit, the RCMP Interview Assistance Team, RCMP Forensic Identification Services, RCMP Police Dog Services and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner's Office.

"On behalf of the Northeast Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit, we would like to thank Tony's family for their patience, partnership and understanding as we continued to move the investigation forward." says Cst. Jeff MacFarlane of the Northeast Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit.
