Lunenburg District RCMP has arrested a boat operator and an ATV rider for impaired driving in the Lunenburg area during Labour Day weekend.
On September 3, at approximately 1:40 a.m., Lunenburg District RCMP was patrolling Hwy. 3 near Chester when an officer observed an ATV travelling on the roadway. A traffic stop was completed on the ATV. The driver, a 32-year-old East Chester man, who was exhibiting signs of impairment, provided a roadside breath sample which resulted in a "fail". The driver was arrested and transported to the Chester RCMP Detachment where he provided subsequent breath samples that registered 110mg%.
That same day, at approximately 7:35 p.m., Lunenburg District RCMP responded to a report of an intoxicated man causing a disturbance on the wharf of Wharf Rd. in Bush Island. When an RCMP officer arrived, a fishing boat was observed offshore maneuvering in circles repeatedly for several minutes. When the boat docked at another wharf nearby, the operator and sole occupant, a 41-year-old Bush Island man, disembarked and exhibited significant signs of impairment. The man was arrested for impaired operation of a vessel and transported to the Bridgewater RCMP detachment where he provided breath samples that registered 190mg% and 170mg%.
The ATV driver and boat operator were both released from custody and will appear in court at a later date. They are facing charges of Impaired Operation of a Conveyance and Operation of a Conveyance 80mg% or over.
Whether it's on land or water, the Nova Scotia RCMP continue to encourage the public to call 911 if they suspect an impaired driver. It might just save a life.
