RCMP in Grand Falls-Windsor were busy over the Labor Day weekend conducting traffic stops and check points. Twelve vehicles were seized stemming from incidents of impaired driving and various traffic violations.

On Friday, six traffic stops were conducted between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. in the Grand Falls-Windsor area. Three men and three women were ticketed for various traffic violations including driving without registration, insurance, and/or driving with a suspended driver's licence. All six vehicles were seized.

That afternoon, police conducted a traffic stop on Harris Avenue in Grand Falls Windsor where a 54-year-old Grand Falls-Windsor man showed signs of alcohol impairment. He failed a roadside breath test, was arrested for impaired driving and was transported to the detachment where he provided breath samples that were two and half times the legal limit. The man was released from custody to attend court at a later date to face charges of impaired driving. His vehicle was seized and his licence was suspended.

At approximately 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, police were following a vehicle on Bond Street and noted a strong odor of cannabis. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver, a 40-year-old Grand Falls-Windsor man, showed signs of drug impairment. He tested positive for cannabis on roadside drug screening equipment and was arrested for impaired driving. The man provided a blood sample at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre which will be sent for further analysis. Police await the result of the blood sample to determine if charges of impaired driving are appropriate.

Later Saturday evening, police conducted traffic stops in the communities of Botwood, Bishop Falls, and Grand Falls-Windsor where three men provided breath samples above the provincial limit. Their licences were suspended and vehicles impounded.

Shortly before midnight on Saturday, police conducted a traffic stop on Carmelite Road in Grand Falls-Windsor.
