Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit investigates found human remains in Fort McMurray – Update 1: Arrest

Alberta RCMP Major Crimes continues to investigate the found human remains that were located on Jan. 24, 2022 at a residence in the Grayling Terrace neighborhood in Fort McMurray, Alta.

As a result of the investigation and an autopsy that took place at the Edmonton Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the human remains have been identified as belonging to missing person Sherri Lynn Flett (43 yrs) of Fort McMurray, Alta.

On Jan. 26, 2022, Alberta RCMP Major Crimes, along with the assistance of the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team, the Wood Buffalo RCMP and the Wood Buffalo RCMP General Investigation Section, arrested a male (37 yrs) of Fort McMurray, Alta. He has been charged with the following offences:

  • Second Degree Murder of Sherri Lynn Flett
  • Indignity to human remains
  • Unlawful confinement
  • Additional firearms related offences.

Following a judicial hearing, the male was remanded into custody and is scheduled to attend Fort McMurray Provincial Court on Jan. 31, 2022.

As this matter is now before the courts, no further information can be provided.
