On January 31, 2021, at approximately 8:45 pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of a single-vehicle collision involving a snowmobile in Delta, Manitoba. When officers arrived on scene near the bank of the lake, the driver of the snowmobile was being transported to hospital with very serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
Investigation determined the 40-year-old male driver of the snowmobile, from Portage la Prairie, is suspended from operating any motor vehicle, including a snowmobile. He had been travelling westbound on Lake Manitoba when he struck a snowdrift, causing his snowmobile to become airborne. Once the snowmobile touched down again, it appears as though the driver lost control, the snowmobile rolled, and he was thrown off the machine.
It is believed alcohol may have been a factor in the collision. The driver was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, but it appears the helmet may not have been secured properly causing it to come off during the collision.
The investigation continues with the assistance of a RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionist.
