Man charged with arson following church fire; police continue to investigate other suspicious fires

A 26-year-old man has been charged with arson following a fire at a church in Shemogue, N.B.

On December 9, 2021, at approximately 5:15 a.m., members of the Shediac RCMP detachment and the Cap-Pelé Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at a church on Route 15. The building was unoccupied at the time, and nobody was injured during the incident.

Later that same day, police arrested a 26-year-old man in relation to the fire.

On December 10, Samuel Vautour from Cap-Pelé appeared in Moncton Provincial Court by way of tele-remand and was charged with arson. He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to return to court later on December 10.

The RCMP is continuing their investigation into other suspicious fires that occurred earlier this year in several communities in the Southeast District. This includes determining whether there are any links between the incidents.
