Behchoko RCMP seize liquor during checkstop

September 17, 2021
Behchoko, Northwest Territories

News release

Behchoko RCMP made a significant alcohol seizure on the day a new liquor prohibition order was put in place by Behchoko community leaders September 15, 2021.

At approximately 11:30 pm, on Wednesday, September 15, 2021, Behchoko RCMP were conducting a checkstop campaign initiative when they stopped a vehicle headed into Behchoko. After investigation, members located and seized a total of 20 – 375 ml bottles of vodka/whiskey, along with a further 2 – 740 ml bottles, and, 5 – 1140 ml bottles, of vodka. Charges under the NWT Liquor Regulations are not being contemplated at this time. Factors that contribute to decisions on charges related to liquor regulations include probability of conviction, and the time/effort to take the person(s) through the judicial process. By removing the alcohol from the distribution chain, we effectively contribute to reducing the harm caused by the sale and distribution of illegal alcohol.

"Behchoko RCMP will continue to support our partner agencies and community leaders on all efforts to address substance abuse and the harm it can bring. We are committed to the safety of our community" states Acting Staff Sergeant Braden Stephenson, Behchoko RCMP Detachment Commander.

Anyone with information on suspicious activity is asked to call Behchoko RCMP at 392-1111, or contact Crime Stoppers at P3 Tips
