News release

Digby RCMP have charged a youth with several charges following an incident that occurred in Digby.

At 3:43 p.m. on May 13, RCMP responded to reports of a possible impaired driver. When police arrived, a male youth, who was the passenger of the vehicle, threatened police. When officers tried to arrest him for making those threats, the youth uttered a racial slur at one of the officers and punched him in the face.

In an effort to gain control of the situation and arrest the youth, the officers used physical force, which resulted in the youth receiving minor injuries. The police officer was not injured.

The youth is facing charges of uttering threats, assaulting a police officer, mischief under $5,000 and resisting arrest. He was released under conditions to a parent and is scheduled to appear in Digby Provincial Court on September 21. The driver of the vehicle was found to not be impaired and was not charged.

The RCMP has learned that a video is circulating on social media, which does not show the entirety of the circumstances.
