In the early morning hours of February 17th, members of the Whitehorse Detachment RCMP were contacted by the Corps of Commissionaires at the Elijah Smith Building, located at 300 Main Street, Whitehorse. A suspicious package of unknown origin had been observed in the front atrium of the building which warranted further investigation.
Whitehorse RCMP immediately attended and began an investigation in the interests of public safety. As a precaution, the "M" Division Explosive Disposal Unit was dispatched and attended. As a result of information collected at the scene, review of scene video and conversations with witnesses, the package was downgraded to non-suspicious and cleared from the scene.
The Whitehorse RCMP would like to thank members of the public for their understanding as the events from this morning unfolded. There is currently no outstanding risk to the public or continuing investigation into the matter.
