News release

Twenty-three-year-old Holly Canning of Pouch Cove was arrested on August 3, 2020, for impaired driving after she stole a taxi cab on the Trans-Canada Highway (TCH) near Long Harbour.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. Monday afternoon, Whitbourne RCMP received a call for assistance from a cab driver who reported having an unruly patron in his taxi. The driver pulled over to the side of the TCH, and got out of the car to contact police. While he was making the call, the woman stole the cab and drove off in a dangerous manner. As police were responding, a number of calls were received from concerned motorists reporting the dangerous driving of the cab.

Three drivers used their vehicles and boxed in the cab to prevent the woman from driving. She allegedly struck a vehicle while she was backing up trying to escape and caused damage to that vehicle and the taxi cab. Police arrived on the scene and Holly Canning was taken into custody. During the arrest, Canning made death threats to the police officers. She was transported to the detachment and provided breath samples that were nearly three times the legal limit.

Canning remains in custody at this time and attends court today. She is charged with the following offences:

  • Impaired driving
  • Theft of motor vehicle
  • Possession of stolen property
  • Two counts of uttering threats
  • Dangerous Operation
  • Two counts of breaching of a court order

RCMP NL thanks those who assisted police with the investigation and continues to fulfill its mandate to protect public safety, enforce the law and ensure the delivery of priority policing services in Newfoundland and Labrador.
