Firearm incident in Whitehorse over Easter long weekend

On Saturday, April 11, 2020 around 5 pm, officers from Carcross RCMP were conducting patrols along Annie Lake Road to monitor noise complaints and reports of overcrowding of campers. They spoke to two individuals who advised the group would depart within an hour.

Later that evening, at approximately 7:30 pm, Whitehorse RCMP were dispatched to the same location for a report of a firearm being discharged. Responding officers learned that a resident in the area had fired shots in the air in an attempt to encourage the group of people gathered nearby to disperse. No one was injured in the incident.

Whitehorse RCMP officers attended the residence and seized several firearms and ammunition. On April 12, 2020, 61-year-old Hans Kolaritsch was charged with the following Criminal Code offences:

  • Pointing a Firearm;
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose;
  • Uttering Threat;
  • Carless Use of a Firearm;
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm.

Mr. Kolaritsch has been released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in court on August 4, 2020.
