On June 10, just after 3:00 am, a Selkirk RCMP officer attempted to pull over a pickup truck without licence plates that was on Sutherland Avenue in Selkirk, Manitoba. The pickup truck fled from the officer to a wooded, unmaintained trail off Highway 204.
The officer followed the truck onto the trail on foot. When the officer engaged the driver of the truck and ordered him out of the vehicle, the driver accelerated at a high rate of speed toward the officer, pushing a downed tree into the officer, striking the officer in the leg. The driver backed up and again accelerated toward the officer, resulting in the officer discharging his firearm at the driver. The vehicle left the scene. Officers found the vehicle abandoned. The suspect had fled on foot.
Investigation led police to arrest a 17-year-old male of the RM of St. Andrews. He is charged with Aggravated Assault, Assault with Weapon, Assault Police Officer, Flight from Police, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Drive while Suspended, Public Mischief and Fail to Comply with Undertaking. He is remanded in custody.
The suspect was not injured in this incident. The officer received minor injuries and was not transported to hospital. The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba was consulted.
The RCMP Major Crime Unit continues with the investigation.
