Police warns businesses of fraudulent cheques circulating in northern New Brunswick

The Northeast District RCMP would like to advise business owners in the Chaleur and Restigouche regions of recent incidents of fraudulent government cheques being used.

The Bathurst RCMP, along with the Beresford, Nigadoo, Petit-Rocher and Pointe-Verte (BNPP) Regional Police, are investigating at least three instances where someone has either cashed or attempted to cash a fraudulent government cheque at a local business. The incidents occurred in Belledune, Allardville and Beresford, all on November 4, 2018.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Bathurst RCMP at 506-548-7771. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.crimenb.ca.

Business owners and employees should be vigilant when accepting cheques, and verify the cheque's security features. If you encounter what you believe to be a fraudulent cheque or other fraudulent financial transaction, report it to your local police.
