Firearms training is one of the key pillars of the Cadet Training Program. RCMP members employ a variety of firearm models in their work, and cadets at Depot are trained on most of these. The Firearms Training Unit (FTU) teaches cadets how to safely handle and care for the RCMP sidearm, shotgun, and carbine.

Of the hours upon hours cadets spend with the FTU, a significant amount of that time is on the range. Depot is home to some of the most advanced firearms training facilities anywhere in North America. There are several multi-million-dollar ranges designed to ensure the very best standard of firearms training is given to RCMP cadets.

These ranges allow for shooting with any police firearm at varying distances and positions. These ranges are technologically advanced, and instructors can replicate a number of real-world elements that may impact the cadet's shooting ability. Strobes can be configured to mimic the lights of a police vehicle in a low-light scenario. Barriers can also be inserted into shooting stalls to mimic shooting from cover. To simulate the challenge of shooting in winter conditions, cadets will also practice wearing their winter parkas and gloves.

Firearms experience among the cadet population often ranges. Some cadets come to Depot very familiar with firearms, while others have never shot before. Highly sophisticated and advanced facilities such as these ranges ensure cadets are not only comfortable and safe with their service weapons, but also proficient to the highest possible standard.
