Behaving Appropriately Give One, Get One

To start, here is an example of a way to behave appropriately in the "real world" and how that can be a useful message online or using technology.

EXAMPLE – Don't talk to strangers in the real world - Don't talk to strangers online or add people online (e.g., Facebook) that you've never talked to in person.

Say please and thank you  - Use manners online or over technology and type/text the same way you would speak.

Don’t swear  - Don’t swear or write inappropriate, hurtful, disrespectful messages online or when texting.

Be respectful of people  - Be respectful of people’s opinions, likes, interests, posts, etc., online.

If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything  - Only type/text things you would be happy or proud to be shown in front of everyone who knows you.

Be yourself  - Stay true to yourself online because your online identity is part of your real world identity

Don’t harass or bully people  -Don’t write or send mean, inappropriate or embarrassing messages or pictures using digital technology.

Be safe and don’t share personal or confidential information -Never give out your password, use a nick-name online, don’t give out your address or location, make sure pictures you post will not hurt or embarrass you or anyone else, make sure pictures do not show identifying features of your neighbourhood or school, etc.

If something makes you upset or uncomfortable, tell an adult - If you see something online or receive a message that is mean, hurtful or inappropriate, tell an adult or report it, and  then delete it without sending it to anyone else
