Client and partner survey results 2021-22

This past year, all three groups surveyed continue to report that the RCMP is important to the safety of Canadians (public: 85%; contract partners: 98%; policing partners and stakeholders: 98%).

Satisfaction with the RCMP remains strong among contract partners (83%), as well as policing partners and stakeholders (87%). However, it is lower for members of the public (57%).

Our contract partners report that we demonstrate professionalism (91%) and integrity (80%), as do our policing partners and stakeholders (professionalism: 90% and integrity: 82%). They also report that they have trust and confidence in the RCMP (82%). We do have feedback, though, on where our operational work could improve.

Members of the public who interacted with us in the past year similarly reported their interactions as professional (82%) and fair (81%). Among members of the public overall, though, evaluation of the RCMP was much lower (professionalism: 61%; integrity 52%). The rating is also lower for trust and confidence in the RCMP (53%).

Listening to our communities, what we learned

Overall, attitudes towards the RCMP are generally positive but have declined over the past year. The majority of Canadians are satisfied with the RCMP's contribution to public safety, but satisfaction has lessened since 2020-21 (57% this year; 62% in 2020-21). The results reveal that the RCMP receives fairly low marks on indicators related to sensitivity and fair treatment (Indigenous peoples: 30%, racialized groups: 35%, people with a disability: 47%, and 2SLGBTQ+: 37%).

Despite concerns about sensitivity and declining attitudes towards the RCMP in general, results suggest that the RCMP maintains a widely positive relationship with the public. A clear majority of Canadians (74%) say they would help the RCMP if asked, believe they have moral obligation to follow police orders (70%), and generally support the RCMP's actions (61%).

How we're using these results

These surveys are a key element of our commitment to accountability. The results give us information about:

  • how Canadians and our contract and policing partners perceive us

  • where they find value in our services

  • where we are falling short of their expectations.

We have heard the concerns expressed from these surveys, and from many other sources, and have put in place an extensive plan for modernization. Vision150 outlines where we want to be in 2023, the 150th anniversary of the RCMP. We are focused on attaining three key organization-wide outcomes:

  1. The RCMP is a healthy and inclusive organization that provides modern policing services.

  2. RCMP culture is characterized by respect for diversity and the contributions of all employees.

  3. Employees, communities, partners, and other stakeholders have trust and confidence in the RCMP.
