RCMP Pipes and Drums Perform at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Aug. 7-29
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Pipes & Drums performing at this year's edition of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo represent a national program comprised of seven bands from cities and provinces across Canada. Its members are drawn from among the best pipers and drummers of each of the bands.
The RCMP Pipes & Drums includes serving members of the Force, employees and citizen volunteers. All of these performers contribute their time and talent to help present a positive image of the RCMP, both at home and abroad. In appearing at the Tattoo, the Pipes and Drums will be entertaining an international audience of some 220,000 people over the course of the 23-day event.
The band proudly wears the RCMP's iconic scarlet red tunic. The pipers and drummers wear the RCMP tartan. Celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Force, the tartan was registered with the Scottish Tartans Society and presented to the RCMP in 1998 by Her Royal Highness, the Princess Royal, at Fredericton, New Brunswick.
The RCMP is unique within the Commonwealth, as a police corps that carries battle honours. The baldric of the Drum Major and the regimental drums of the band bear battle and campaign honours that connect the RCMP to the Crown through service in South Africa and both World Wars. The band members also wear more current campaign medals dating from United Nations service in the Former Yugoslavia to NATO service in Afghanistan.
The Band is under the direction of Pipe Major Wayne Moug, Drum Major Graham Muir, Pipe Sergeant Brian Morrison and Drum Sergeant Bruce Neill.
