Investigative Recap

March 18: At approximately 1:00 p.m., Indian Head RCMP received a report of a vehicle stuck in the snow on a service road near Kendal, SK.

Officers responded and while en route observed the described vehicle driving on a grid road. When police approached, the vehicle suddenly sped up significantly. The officer engaged their emergency lights and attempted a traffic stop but the vehicle did not stop.

Indian Head RCMP continued working to locate the vehicle and alerted nearby detachments and Regina Police Service to be on the lookout for it.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., Indian Head and White Butte RCMP received a report of a suspicious vehicle in a field outside of McLean, SK. Investigation determined it was the same vehicle they attempted to stop earlier.

When police approached it, the vehicle drove off.

With the assistance of Regina Police Service's Aerial Support Unit, the vehicle was tracked to a residence in Regina. The occupants attempted to flee on foot, but were arrested by officers from the Regina Police Service.

As a result of continued investigation, 32-year-old Dylan Beler from Regina and a female youth, who can't be identified as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act, were each charged with:

- two counts, flight from peace officer, Section 320.17, Criminal Code;

- one count, resist/obstruct peace officer, Section 129(a), Criminal Code;

- one count, mischief over $5,000, Section 430(3), Criminal Code;

- one count, mischief under $5,000, Section 430(4), Criminal Code; and

- one count, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, Section 320.13(1), Criminal Code.

Beler is also charged with one count, fail to comply with probation order, Section 733.1(1), Criminal Code. He is scheduled to appear in Regina Provincial Court on March 25, 2024.

The youth is scheduled to appear in Regina Provincial Court on March 26, 2024.

While Butte RCMP and Indian Head RCMP thank Regina Police Service, Fort Qu'Appelle RCMP, Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan and Saskatchewan RCMP Police Dog Services for their assistance in this investigation.

March 20: Wadena RCMP were conducting proactive patrols and performed a routine traffic stop on Fishing Lake First Nation.

Investigation determined the driver did not have a license and he was arrested at the scene.

A search of his person and a subsequent search of the vehicle led to officers locating and seizing approximately 225 grams of methamphetamine, an unknown amount of pharmaceutical style pills, a hunting-style knife, and drug paraphernalia. Photos of the seized items are attached.

27-year-old Ashley Smoke from Fishing Lake First Nation was charged with one count, possession for the purpose of trafficking, Section 5(2), Controlled Drugs and Substance Act and one count, possession of the proceeds of crime under $5000, Section 354(1)(a), Criminal Code.

Ashley Smoke has been remanded into custody until his next scheduled appearance in court in Wynyard on March 28, 2024.

Wadena RCMP continue to investigate.

March 22: At approximately 11:30 p.m., Prince Albert RCMP were conducting proactive patrols on Highway #2, outside the city of Prince Albert. Shortly after, an officer observed a vehicle registered to a male with court-ordered curfew conditions for drug trafficking and firearms offences traveling into the city.

The RCMP officer located the vehicle on 12th Street West in the City of Prince Albert. They engaged their emergency lights and attempted a traffic stop. The officer got out of their vehicle and as they approached, the driver discharged bear spray at the RCMP officer. The vehicle then fled at a high rate of speed.

The officer suffered effects of the bear spray, but did not report serious injuries.

Notification was sent to the Prince Albert Police Service, and shortly after they located the vehicle on the 2700 block of 2nd Avenue West in Prince Albert, SK. A second vehicle stop was attempted; however, the vehicle fled again at a high rate of speed.

Shortly after, Prince Albert Police Service located the vehicle abandoned on the 400 block of 23rd Street East. With assistance of officers from the Prince Albert Police Service Canine Unit, the male was apprehended in a yard on the 400 block of 23rd Street East.

As a result of continued investigation, 23-year-old Anthony Smerek from Prince Albert is charged with:

- one count, flight from police officer, Section 320.17, Criminal Code;

- one count, resist arrest, Section 129(a), Criminal Code; and

- one count, fail to comply with release order, Section 145(5)(a), Criminal Code.

Smerek is scheduled to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court on May 15, 2024.

March 23: Sandy Bay RCMP received a request to assist a partner agency in attending a residence in Sandy Bay. When officers arrived, they observed several illicit items in plain view. A search warrant was executed at the house, where members located and seized one imitation handgun, trafficking paraphernalia, approximately 756 grams of crack and cocaine, and cash. Officers arrested four adults at the residence.

39-year-old Natali Malot Dak Lual, 37-year-old Paul Chan Donat Dau and 35-year-old, 22-year-old Chan Lual of Calgary, and Ervin Arthur Shingler of Sandy Bay are each charged with:

- one count, possession for the purpose of trafficking, Section 5(2), Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;

- one count, possession of proceeds of crime, Section 354 (1)(a), Criminal Code; and

- one count, possession of an imitation firearm, Section 88, Criminal Code

35-year-old Ervin Arthur Shingler was also charged with three counts, failure to comply with release order condition, Section 154 (5)(a), Criminal Code

They are scheduled to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court via video on March 25, 2024.
