PEI RCMP, working in partnership with other police agencies, dealt with seven impaired driving incidents over the weekend.

During a highway check stop in the Kensington area on Friday evening, PEI RCMP Provincial Traffic Services, Kensington Police Services and Prince District RCMP stopped five impaired drivers and over the weekend two more impaired drivers were taken off Island roads. The details are as follows:

  1. March 15, 1:58 p.m. in Mount Albion, 49 year old man received 7 day driving suspension and 3 day vehicle impoundment for driving over the limit but under .08 mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.
  2. March 15, 3:25 p.m. in Stanchel, 49 year old man was arrested for impaired by Cannabis
  3. March 15, 4:20 p.m. in Stanchel, 23 year old man was arrested for impaired by Cannabis
  4. March 15, 7:45 p.m. in Kensington, a 45 year old man was arrested for impaired by Cannabis
  5. March 15, 7:50 p.m. in Frenchfort, a 50 year old man refused a roadside screening device
  6. March 15, 9:30 p.m. in Kensington, a 44 year old man was arrested for impaired by Cannabis
  7. March 16, 6:35 p.m. in Mount Herbert, 26 year old man was arrested for impaired by Cannabis

In the past week, PEI RCMP arrested 9 separate drivers impaired by cannabis.

"There is a huge role the public plays in keeping our roads safe, and it begins by not driving impaired," says Chief Superintendent Kevin Lewis, Commanding Officer PEI RCMP. "This is an Island-wide concern and when police agencies partner on these activities we bring a greater vigilance to our enforcement. We welcome every opportunity to work with our partners in this way yet I am deeply disappointed that we still see the excessive trend of impaired driving on PEI, as these drivers pose a significant risk to the safety of all Islanders using our roads," adds C/Supt Lewis.

PEI RCMP remind all drivers, if you suspect an impaired driver, this is an emergency so please call 9-1-1 and report any details you can.
