Man charged with second-degree murder in connection with homicide

A 38-year-old man from Burton, N.B., has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a homicide on Oromocto First Nation.

On April 27, 2024, at approximately 12:30 p.m., members of the Oromocto RCMP responded to a call for service at a residence on Oromocto First Nation. When police arrived at the scene, a 54-year-old woman from the community was discovered deceased.

Later the same day, 38-year-old Jared Smith was arrested in connection with the homicide. On April 28, 2024, he appeared in Provincial Court by way of tele-remand, and was charged with second-degree murder. He is scheduled to return to court on April 29.

The New Brunswick RCMP's Major Crime Unit is leading the investigation, and treating the incident as a homicide.
