Charges for uttering threats online

On January 31, an RCMP investigation led to charges being laid against an individual in connection with threats posted on social media. The individual was Paul Clarissou, 30, from Montréal, who allegedly threatened to kill Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

This charge is the result of a short investigation by the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team, following a report that Mr. Clarissou had made threatening comments. The accused appears today at the Montréal courthouse. He is facing the following charge under the Criminal Code:

The RCMP takes seriously any threats that can affect one's sense of security. Violent statements will not be tolerated. Perpetrators may face criminal charges involving significant sentences. Such incidents must be reported if we are to combat this type of crime.
