Alberta RCMP in custody death in Fort McMurray

March 26, 2024
Wood Buffalo, Alberta

News release

On March 21, 2024, at 7:50 p.m., Wood Buffalo RCMP were dispatched to a local drop-in centre for complaints of a male acting erratically and committing an indecent act. Upon arrival, the suspect was identified by police, arrested and lodged into cells at the Wood Buffalo Detachment.

On March 22, 2024, at approximately 5:28 a.m., the male was found unresponsive in cells. Life-saving measures were initiated, and EMS was immediately contacted. Upon arrival, EMS continued providing life-saving measures but declared the male deceased.

In compliance with legislative requirements, the director of law enforcement was immediately notified causing the deployment of ASIRT to conduct an independent investigation. Events like this are difficult for everyone involved; however, the RCMP believes in accountability and transparency and will provide full support to the ASIRT investigators.

Independent of ASIRT's investigation, the RCMP's internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during this incident. RCMP training, policy, police response, and the member's duty status will be subject to review. The RCMP is, of course, fully cooperating with ASIRT. All media inquiries about this incident should now be directed to ASIRT at 780-641-9099.
