Virden RCMP respond to weapons incident

On July 20, 2023, at approximately 2:30 pm, Virden RCMP responded to a report of threats involving weapons, at a residence on Sioux Valley Dakota Nation.

The investigation has determined that two males attended the residence on Sioux Valley Dakota Nation to speak with one of the occupants. A male suspect exited the home in possession of a machete and threatened the males. The males returned to their vehicle and a short time later the suspect returned and was in possession of a firearm and pointed it at the males.

RCMP immediately attended and contained the area along with the assistance of the First Nation Safety Officers. RCMP Police Dog Services along with the Emergency Response Team were deployed to the scene.

There were several adults and children inside the residence who exited the home safely.

A short time later the male suspect was located and arrested without incident.

The home was searched and officers seized a pellet gun.

Bruce Blacksmith, 41, has been charged with:

Pointing a Firearm x2
Uttering Threats x2
Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm

He was remanded into custody.

Virden RCMP continue to investigate.
