SiRT investigating the death of an individual during police response

The New Brunswick RCMP has requested the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) review the death of an individual that occurred during the New Brunswick RCMP's response to a critical incident.

In the evening of February 3, 2023, members of the New Brunswick RCMP, including members of the Emergency Response Team, attended a camp in the LSD of Rivière-Verte in order to execute a search warrant related to a firearms complaint.

While approaching the camp, gun shots were heard and fired from the camp towards the attending officers. No officers were injured from the gun shots.

Upon executing the warrant and entering the camp, police located the body of a 37-year-old man, from the community, deceased.

Following further review of the events, the New Brunswick RCMP has referred the incident to the Nova Scotia SiRT for an independent investigation.

The investigation is continuing.
