News release

RCMP-RNC Joint Forces Operation (JFO) West continues its work disrupting the criminal networks that bring dangerous, illicit drugs into communities. Drug trafficking has a number of negative impacts, including increased violent crime, property-related crimes and a number of overdose deaths.

Violent crimes stemming from the illicit drug trade commonly include home invasions, robberies, assaults and threats. The victims of these crimes are often themselves involved in the drug trade. JFO West commonly locates firearms, ammunition and other weapons, some of which are restricted, when searching the homes of drug traffickers. These weapons are often used as a form of intimidation.

Drug trafficking can also cause an increase in the numbers of property-related crimes, including incidents of thefts and break and enters from businesses, residential and seasonal properties. Those responsible for these types of crimes are often committing them to obtain property to sell in support of their drug addictions. Victims of these crimes often are not involved in the local drug trade and are left without their property and in a position of repairing any damages caused.

The most serious impacts are the number of individuals in this province who die as a result of a drug overdose. These deaths have devastating impacts on that individual's family, friends and community. According to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, in 2022, 29 individuals (approximately 65% men and approximately 35% women) died as a result of drug overdoses in this province. Toxicology reports showed that cocaine was the leading drug detected in 15 of the 29 deceased. With pending cases, the number of overdose deaths for 2022 is subject to change as more data becomes available.

Drug trafficking is a community issue with serious impacts on society. Police rely heavily on assistance from the public in combatting this type of crime.

If you are a resident on the province's west coast and you suspect there is drug trafficking in your neighbourhood, JFO West wants to talk with you. You can remain anonymous while speaking directly with a police officer by contacting the JFO West designated drug line at (709) 637-4221.

Residents in other areas of the province are encouraged to contact their local police detachment to report illegal drug activities.

JFO West, which includes dedicated police officers from both the RCMP and RNC, targets drug trafficking and organized crime on the west coast of the province.
