Grande Prairie RCMP advise of heavy police presence – Update #2

News release

On Dec. 31, 2022, at approximately 9:47 p.m., Grande Prairie RCMP received a firearms related complaint at a residence in the area of 96 Street and 98 Avenue Grande Prairie.

Grande Prairie RCMP attended the residence and the investigation determined one individual was inside, armed with a firearm. Grande Prairie RCMP maintained containment of the property while surrounding residences were evacuated and further RCMP resources, Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Police Dog Services (PDS) were deployed to the location.

At approximately 5:57 a.m. a 34-year-old individual resident of Grande Prairie surrendered to police and was taken into custody. A search of the residence resulted in the seizure of rifle.

The individual is facing several firearms related charges and is currently awaiting a judicial hearing.

Grande Prairie RCMP have cleared the area at 96 Street and 98 Avenue. The shelter in place is lifted.

There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident.

Grande Prairie RCMP are currently responding to a police incident on 96 Street at 98 Avenue. in Grande Prairie. For your safety, police are asking residents to avoid the area and shelter in place.

There is a heavy police presence in the area and no public access to this area at this time.

Please refrain from posting photos of officers on social media until the incident is over.
