Devon RCMP on scene of person in the water – Update #2

News release

On July 22, 2023, Parkland RCMP were notified that human remains were recovered by the Edmonton Fire Department in the North Saskatchewan River near the 9th Street Bridge in Edmonton. The remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine identify. On July 27, 2023, Parkland RCMP were notified that the human remains were those of missing person Austin Laporte who was reported to have been last seen struggling in the water of the North Saskatchewan River on July 16, 2023.

Our condolences go out to Austin's family and friends.

The RCMP thank those individuals and organizations that assisted with the search for Austin.

Devon RCMP on scene of person in the water - Update

On July 16, 2023, at 3:34 p.m., Devon RCMP responded to a report of a person struggling in the water in the North Saskatchewan River. The person was later identified as Beaumont, Alta. resident Austin Richmond Laporte (20). RCMP, with assistance from Devon, Parkland and Edmonton Fire departments, deployed multiple boats and drones. As of July 17, 2023, Parkland RCMP took over the investigation and is currently searching for the whereabouts of Austin Richmond Laporte.

Austin is described as:

  • 5 feet 8 inches tall
  • 190 pounds
  • brown hair
  • brown eyes
  • Last seen wearing black shorts and no shirt

Devon RCMP on scene of person in the water

Devon RCMP and other first responders are currently on scene at the Devon Boat Launch (Voyager Park Boat Ramp) responding to reports of a person struggling in the water in the North Saskatchewan River. While officers respond, we are asking local residents and river users down stream to stay vigilant in and near the river for anyone that may appear to be in distress.
