Codiac Policing Study Results

October 5, 2023
Fredericton, New Brunswick

Statement

Since 1998, when the municipal police forces of Moncton and Dieppe were amalgamated with the RCMP Riverview Detachment to form the Codiac Regional (RCMP), the Codiac RCMP has provided policing services to the three municipalities.

In April 2022, the City of Moncton, with support from both Dieppe and Riverview, announced its intention to conduct a study of policing in the Codiac region. The purpose of the study was to determine what a modern policing service should look like and establish best practices by comparing the current service to other policing models available. The study also reviewed the cost of various policing models and scenarios that met the required criteria found in modern and progressive police services, while assessing its composition, type of service provided, specialty units and support services. On October 6th, 2023, the results of this study will be released publicly.

The results of the study concluded that the RCMP provides an exceptional service to the cities of Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview, and remains the best option for the tri-community area. These findings also support the conclusions of similar studies done in 2009-2010.

We appreciate and accept the recommendations identified in the study. While the analytical products used for this study differ from those utilized internally by J Division RCMP, its findings also reinforce that the Codiac RCMP policing model is the best option for the citizens of Moncton Dieppe and Riverview. The New Brunswick RCMP, including the Codiac RCMP, are always evolving and striving to modernize, and adapt to evolving community needs. We will continue to work with the CRPA to provide the communities with the information and data needed to support the quarterly reporting process, informed decision-making, community engagement and resource requirements.

J Division RCMP encourages all municipalities to explore their options when it comes to ensuring citizens are receiving outstanding policing services to ensure the public safety of their communities. With this in mind, I am confident in the high quality service the RCMP provides to the communities we serve. We know that people care about public safety in their communities and the New Brunswick RCMP is committed to utilizing all resources to provide the best possible service, to reduce and prevent crime, all while remaining fiscally responsible to our budget. We are the only law enforcement agency in the province to maintain a full complement of frontline and highly specialised policing services which exceed provincial and national standards, such as the Internet Child Exploitation unit, Digital Forensic Services, Air Services, and many others.

Every day, members of the Codiac RCMP deliver an outstanding policing service in the communities where they live and work. The past few years have been very challenging times, but our members and municipal employees are dedicated professionals who continue to face increasingly complex policing and social issues with professionalism, dedication, and compassion.

The New Brunswick RCMP will continue to engage with our partners and communities on developing priorities and directing our resources to where we can have the most impact. We also continue our commitment to collaborate with the Government of New Brunswick, our municipal contract partners, and the public as we all work together to keep New Brunswick safe.
