Yukon RCMP Traffic Service Unit patrol Alaska Highway, February 2022

Yukon RCMP traffic section has been working hard throughout the territory to keep drivers and other road users safe. Several recent enforcement initiatives have lead to charges and violation tickets.

Between February 18, 2022 and February 28, 2022, the Yukon RCMP Traffic Services Unit conducted patrols on the Alaska Highway between Haines Junction and Watson Lake. RCMP Traffic Services issued thirty-six violation tickets to individuals travelling at speeds between 30km/h and 60km/h over the posted speed limits.

In addition to the speeding violations, Yukon RCMP located two impaired drivers during their patrols. On February 18, 2022 in the Haines Junction/Champagne area of the Alaska Highway. The unlicensed driver was observed driving 46km/h over the speed limit. During the subsequent traffic stop the individual provided breath samples that were double the legal limit. The vehicle was impounded and the individual was released to appear in court in Whitehorse.

On February 26, 2022, Yukon RCMP Traffic Services Unit was conducting a stationary patrol in Watson Lake, Yukon. The officer observed two individuals operating a snowmobile without a working tail light and neither individual was wearing a helmet. The driver provided breath samples of 120mg and 110mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The snowmobile was impounded and the individual was released to appear in court in Watson Lake.

Yukon RCMP Traffic Services unit continues to fulfill its mandate to protect public safety on Yukon roadways. At this time of year, road conditions can be unpredictable, the Yukon RCMP would like to remind motorists to slow down, obey highway traffic signs, and drive according to conditions of the road. Impaired Driving is dangerous year round!
