North East Traffic Services Cape Breton County RCMP arrests impaired driver after collision

North East Traffic Services Cape Breton County RCMP has arrested an impaired driver after a collision on Hwy 125 in Balls Creek.

On February 7 at 3:26 p.m., police were dispatched to a report of a motor vehicle collision on Hwy. 125 in Balls Creek. Officers learned that a small car had been travelling west on Hwy. 125 when it almost hit a larger SUV in front of it, swerved on the roadway and went into a ditch, rolling over. There were no injuries to the occupants.

The female passenger attempted to leave the scene, was detained and released without charge. The male driver fled the scene on foot, tossing stolen property into the ditch. Officers located and arrested the man, who was showing signs of impairment, a short distance away. Police would like to thank the numerous witnesses who came forward to assist with the investigation and getting the driver off the roadways.

The 52-year-old Sydney Mines man was remanded into custody at the Cape Breton Correctional Centre and will appear in Sydney Provincial Court on February 10, 2022 at 9:30 a.m.

The man is facing charges of:

  • Impaired Operation of a Conveyance by Drug,
  • Refusal of a Drug Influence Evaluation,
  • Failing to Remain at the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Collision,
  • Resisting Arrest,
  • Breaching an Existing Undertaking,
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime,

The man was also issued summary offence tickets for driving while revoked and driving without insurance.
