News release

Correction: A previous version of this news release incorrectly stated that the man had pled guilty to 14 charges laid against him. The man pled guilty to eight charges, and seven other charges were withdrawn. We apologize for this mistake.

A 62-year-old man from Maisonette, N.B. has been sentenced to 22 months in jail following a series of incidents involving pointing a firearm in the community.

On August 17, 2022, Marcel Gauvin appeared in Bathurst Provincial Court and pled guilty to eight charges in connection with the incidents.

On September 16, he was sentenced to a total of 22 months in jail, minus time served. Following his release, he will be required to provide a DNA sample, will be prohibited from driving a vehicle for a period of 12 months, and will be prohibited from owning any firearms for life.

These charges stem from a series of incidents that occurred on April 24, when members of the Caraquet RCMP responded to a report of a disturbance at a home on Rue des Chalets, in Maisonette. Police received information that a man had pointed a firearm at someone, and had fled the scene in a vehicle.

The incident concluded when the man was located near a wooded area on Highway 134. The man surrendered to police and was arrested without further incident. Subsequent to the arrest, police seized an unsecured firearm as well as ammunition.
