On December 3, 2022, at approximately 10 p.m., Hay River RCMP officers were conducting a checkstop within the community as a part of National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day. Officers noted the driver of one vehicle passing through the checkpoint appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, which led to a roadside test being administered. The driver failed the test and was arrested.
Breath samples were subsequently obtained from the driver that were well in excess of three times the limit prescribed in the Criminal Code. As a result, police have charged the 46-year-old Alberta man with:
- Impaired Operation of a Conveyance – section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
- Impaired Operation of a Conveyance with a blood alcohol content exceeding 80mg of alcohol in 100mL of blood – section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
The man was released to appear in court on January 30, 2023.
As a result of traffic safety initiatives undertaken on December 3, Hay River RCMP also issued one 24-hour alcohol-related driving suspension, seven summary offence tickets and 16 warnings to motorists.
