Forty-nine-year-old David Power of Mount Pearl was arrested by RCMP Traffic Services East after he crashed a stolen vehicle into a business in Holyrood yesterday morning. Prior to crashing the vehicle, Power fled from both the RNC and the RCMP.

Shortly after 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, Holyrood RCMP received information from the RNC of a stolen vehicle that failed to stop for police within the metro region. The vehicle was last seen on the Peace Keepers Way in Conception Bay South, heading towards Holyrood. An officer with RCMP Traffic Services East located the vehicle in Holyrood and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle failed to stop and sped off in a dangerous manner in a residential area. In the interest of public safety, police did not pursue the vehicle. A short distance away, the vehicle was located after it had departed the roadway and crashed into a business. The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle, David Power, was not injured. He was arrested at the scene of the crash for a number of criminal offences and showed signs of drug impairment. He was transported to the detachment and refused to submit to a Drug Influence Evaluation.

Power was held in police custody overnight and attends court today.

He faces the following criminal charges, laid by the RCMP:

  • Flight from police
  • Dangerous operation
  • Possession of stolen property
  • Drug impaired driving
  • Refusing to comply with a demand (Drug Influence Evaluation)
  • Failing to comply with a condition of a court release order

In addition, Power is charged by the RNC for the following criminal offences:

  • Theft of a motor vehicle
  • Flight from police
  • Dangerous operation
  • Failing to comply with a condition of a court release order

The investigation is continuing.
