Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit investigate and lay charges in Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation death

On Dec. 1, 2022, at approx. 8:20 p.m., Mayerthorpe RCMP received a firearms complaint outside of a residence located on Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, Alta. near Glenevis, Alta.

Upon arrival, Mayerthorpe RCMP observed a victim with serious injuries. RCMP provided first aid; however, the victim, identified as Alberta Beach resident Troy Pearce (53), succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by EMS.

The circumstances of Troy Peace's death warranted Alberta RCMP Major Crimes taking carriage of this investigation. On Dec. 2, 2022, Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit charged a 29-year-old individual, of Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, with second-degree murder.

Following a judicial interim release hearing, the individual was remanded into custody to speak to bail and is scheduled to attend St. Albert provincial court on Dec. 5, 2022.

An autopsy is scheduled at the Edmonton Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Dec. 6, 2022.

As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be provided.
