A commercial Tractor Trailer stopped by Yukon RCMP Traffic Services in Kluane by Sheep Mountain.

Between 1 to 4 June, 2021, Yukon RCMP Traffic Services, in collaboration with Whitehorse RCMP Detachment, Yukon Government Highways and Public Works – Carrier Compliance and National Safety Code, and the Canada Border Service Agency.

The operation resulted in the following number of charges:

  • 38 Territorial charges
  • 33 charges against commercially registered vehicles
  • 17 National Safety Code charges
  • 17 warnings
  • six CVSA – Out-of-Service violations
  • five charges against privately registered vehicles
  • three charges under Transportation of Dangerous Goods
  • one Impaired Driving Criminal Code Investigation
  • one Impaired Driving with a 24-hour suspension

There were a number of situations throughout this effort. Some of these were :

  • six Commercial tractor trailer's were located in noncompliance with Yukon Regulations. They were traveling the Haines Alaska to mainland Alaska route (or vice versa) without Yukon permits and in contravention of dimensional requirements. Two were also in violation of cargo securement and transportation of dangerous goods
  • 20 violations issued for no maintenance /safety inspections
  • four Commercial Tractor Trailer's issued tickets for driving at unreasonable speeds. This included one driver driving north bound through the port of entry at 80-kilometer per hour in a 30-kilometer per hour zone, stating that he did not want to use his brakes, and "it's only the border people that are around the area"
  • 24 hour issued at port of entry for impairment – private vehicle. Oral Screening Device used, with positive result. Impaired investigation initiated through Beaver Creek RCMP Detachment.
  • open liquor sized from private vehicle, in cooler beside driver. A Liquor Act was ticket issued
  • one out of service issued for fraudulent log book. The driver claimed co-driver after questioning about how he drove from Haines Junction to Beaver Creek in 1.5 hours.
  • Six out of services issued including: one False log, one unable to provide 14-days of logs, two for insecure cargo, and two for dangerous goods
  • 23 commercial Tractor Trailer units were checked as follows: June 2 – 11 checked (six inbound, five outbound); June 3- 10 checked (five inbound, five outbound); June 4 –two checked
  • one private vehicle, a Ford Windstar mini van, was stopped at 157-kilometers per hour.
  • one commercial Tractor Trailer stopped in Kluane by Sheep Mountain. Excavator not secured, among other safety violations.

Operation Corridor continues and more activities will continue to be conducted by Yukon RCMP Traffic Services in collaboration with its partners with the goal to improve road safety for all who travel our highways.
