RCMP reminds snowmobile operators of safety and the laws

Snowmobiling is an enjoyable outdoor winter activity for many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. RCMP NL reminds residents to be aware of the laws regarding snowmobile use and to keep safety in mind when hitting the trails.

Many parts of the province are seeing underage snowmobile operators crossing roadways. Children under the age of 13 are not permitted to operate a snowmobile – they often lack the judgement skills and the physicality required to safely operate the machines, especially when attempting to cross a roadway.

Although helmets are not currently mandatory for snowmobile operators in Newfoundland and Labrador, they are highly encouraged for safety reasons. Helmets should be properly fitted or fastened to work as intended in the event of a collision; otherwise, they may come off upon impact. Goggles, safety glasses or a face shield are required when a snowmobile is not equipped with a windshield that is of a height to provide adequate protection to the eyes.

Due to the lack of consistently cold weather this winter, most bodies of water throughout the province are not safe for travel, having no ice coverage, areas of thin ice or open areas.

RCMP NL encourages snowmobile operators to avoid travel over bodies of water where possible and to continually check ice conditions.

Enjoy our great outdoors safely!
