RCMP Major Crime Unit investigate fatal fire in Sturgeon County

On Nov. 22, 2021, at approximately 12:25 p.m., Morinville RCMP responded to a suspicious fire on an oil lease site on Township Road 580 between Range Road 243 and Range Road 244 in Sturgeon County, Alta.

After the fire was extinguished, human remains were found. The circumstances surrounding the fire are believed to be suspicious. The remains are being transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner who will be working with the RCMP in determining identity and cause of death.

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit have taken over carriage of this investigation, with the assistance of the RCMP Forensic Identification Section and a Fire investigator.

The RCMP Major Crime Unit is looking for information from anyone who witnessed the fire or anyone who was in the area or who has dash camera footage from driving in the area on Nov. 22 between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. to contact Morinville RCMP at 780-939-4520 or your local police.
