Organization and seven people fined for violating Health Protection Act

May 17, 2021
Weston, Nova Scotia

News release

Kings District RCMP have charged seven people, as well as an organization, for violating Nova Scotia's Health Protection Act.

At approximately 11:05 a.m. yesterday morning, police became aware of a faith gathering being held at a local church in Weston. Police attended the church and determined that a faith gathering was underway. Police charged seven people and the organization under the Health Protection Act for having a faith gathering contrary to public health restrictions. Four men and three women were issued tickets with a fine amount of $2,422.00. The fine issued to the organization was $11,622.50

Police had previously responded to similar complaints at the location on both May 2 and May 9, 2021. On May 2, a warning was issued, as restrictions had recently changed to no longer allow faith gatherings. The organization was advised that continued faith gatherings would likely result in fines being issued. On May 9, 26 people and the organization were fined after a faith gathering went ahead despite public health restrictions.

The RCMP is reminding everyone to follow all public health orders and municipal bylaws. We all need to do our part to reduce the spread of COVID-19. The RCMP would like to thank Nova Scotians for their continued support, and express appreciation to the vast majority who are adhering to the directives outlined by the provincial government.
