RCMP NL is increasingly seeing posts concerning crime made on various social media platforms without being reported directly to police. As well, messages and videos of alleged crimes are regularly sent to RCMP NL through the Facebook Messenger app with the expectation of investigation and enforcement. Please note that the RCMP can not accept complaints through social media.
Enforcement requires evidence of an offence which is often gathered through formal witness statements and other investigative avenues. Videos and social media posts, on their own, do not likely meet the threshold for evidence of an offence or to support charges.
RCMP NL continues to highlight results of investigations and crimes committed on its Facebook and Twitter platforms in both official languages and thanks the public for their engagement in sharing and commenting on the posts.
RCMP NL encourages anyone with information on a crime within RCMP detachment areas to report directly to police by calling or visiting a detachment. Contact information for all RCMP NL detachments can be found here: https://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/detach/en/find/NL.
Crimes can also be reported to Crimestoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (TIPS is 8477), by Secure Web Tips at www.nlcrimestoppers.com or through the app P3 Tips.
In an emergency, always call 911.
