Burin Peninsula RCMP conducts traffic stop with known suspended driver who is arrested for drug-impaired driving.

Burin Peninsula RCMP arrested a known suspended driver for drug-impaired driving following a traffic stop on June 14, 2021.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., on Monday afternoon, an officer was on patrol on Route 210 just south of Marystown and observed a known suspended driver operating a truck. The officer pulled in behind the vehicle and activated emergency equipment to conduct a traffic stop. The truck travelled over the centre line and into the oncoming lane of travel and then veered onto the gravel shoulder of the road. The driver locked on the brakes which created a cloud of dust that impeded the officer's vision and caused a minor collision between the patrol car and the rear end of the truck. Neither the driver nor the officer were injured in the collision.

The driver showed signs of drug-impairment. He was arrested, provided with a blood demand and was transported to the Burin Peninsula Health Centre where a blood sample was collected for further analysis. Officers await the results of the blood sample to determine if charges of drug-impaired driving are appropriate.

A further driver's licence suspension was issued and the truck was seized and impounded.

The investigation is continuing.
