I want to take this opportunity to thank the members of the public for their help and support during our response to the shooting incident in Riverview, N.B. on January 5, 2021.

By sharing our messaging, you helped ensure credible and accurate information circulated, reducing rumours and misinformation. The majority of people also respected our request to only call 911 for emergencies, or with information that could assist the investigation. Many people contributed important tips, and I thank you for your assistance.

I know this was an alarming incident for many in the community, and I know there are many questions about our use of the Alert Ready system, and the timing of when information was shared.

No police officer or agency can know everything about an evolving situation immediately. It is our responsibility, duty and commitment to the communities we serve to investigate, gather facts, determine risk, and act to protect people. This is exactly what we did, and we shared information we knew could keep people safe once we could confirm it was credible and accurate.

From the very outset of the incident, we were prepared to launch Alert Ready should circumstances warrant its use. Having direct access to the system meant we were able to send the message almost immediately upon deciding the incident met the criteria, and we could confirm the information being shared. The areas that received the message were strategically chosen based on investigative information we had available at the time. We utilized our social media channels to provide additional information, such as images, and reminders about keeping 911 lines open for emergencies.

Like all critical incidents, we will be reviewing our response to ensure we are establishing and building on best practices. Our goal is to ensure we are always doing our best in each unique situation.

Thank you all for your trust in the RCMP.

A/Commr. Larry Tremblay

Commanding Officer, New Brunswick RCMP
