An adult male is in custody after an incident that occurred in Prince Albert National Park early this morning.

At 2:40 a.m. August 9, 2020, Waskesiu/Prince Albert RCMP received multiple calls from people in the overflow campground at Prince Albert National Park. They advised a male in the overflow campground was causing a disturbance, yelling and reported they heard loud noises that sounded like bear bangers or gunshots.

A Parks Canada Warden attended the scene. The male got into a vehicle and drove down a walking trail in the overflow area. RCMP arrived on scene and the male drove into an RCMP vehicle while exiting the same trail. The male stopped driving, exited his vehicle and fled on foot into the bush in the overflow campground area.

The overflow campground at PA National Park was evacuated and all campers from the overflow were asked to pack up and leave the campground. RCMP and Parks Canada Wardens remained on scene and monitored the area where campers were packing up in addition to actively searching for the male.

Shortly before 10:00 a.m. the adult male was located and arrested at the overflow campground without incident. The investigation is ongoing and further updates will be provided as they become available.

The RCMP would like to thank the people camping in Prince Albert National Park for their vigilance and cooperation during this incident.
