Red Deer, Alberta

News release

RCMP have laid charges, including first degree murder, against a 54-year-old male after yesterday's homicide of a Red Deer physician at the Village Mall Walk-In Clinic.

Deng Mabiour of Red Deer faces the following charges:

  • First degree murder
  • Assault of a police officer
  • Assault with weapon

Mabiour assaulted 45-year-old Walter Reynolds in the Village Mall Walk-In Clinic shortly after 11 a.m. on August 10. Reynolds was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

"This was not a random attack, and the first degree murder charge speaks to the premeditated nature of this incident," said Supt. Gerald Grobmeier, Officer in Charge of the Red Deer RCMP. "There were many witnesses and people who acted bravely during this assault, and we encourage anyone to reach out for support as these incidents can be traumatic and difficult to process."

Red Deer Victim Services is available to anyone looking for support and can be reached by calling 403-406-2345.

Red Deer RCMP wishes to thank the quick responses from witnesses at the clinic, The City of Red Deer Emergency Services, Red Deer Transit and RCMP Major Crimes.

Mabiour is scheduled to appear in Red Deer Provincial Court on August 12.
