RCMP respond to Headingley Correctional Centre after a report of a prison escape in progress

On April 18, 2020, at 10:25 pm, Manitoba RCMP responded to the Headingley Correctional Centre after a report of a prison escape in progress.

One inmate, a 39-year-old male, attempted to flee and was caught by correctional officers at the scene.

A second inmate managed to escape. It was determined that he fled on foot and swam across the Assiniboine River.

Multiple RCMP units from Headingley, Stonewall, Portage la Prairie, Police Dog Services and Traffic Services responded. Units from the Winnipeg Police Services, including the K9 Unit and Air1 also responded.

Road blocks were set up and the inmate was located by RCMP Police Dog Services, with the assistance of AIR1, hiding in a truck in the town of Old Headingley.

The inmate, a 23-year-old male, was arrested without incident and taken to hospital with minor injuries.

No police officers were injured. RCMP continues to investigate.
