News release

NT RCMP attended the scene of a snowmachine that went through the ice near Gameti, and located a deceased male.

At approximately 11:30 am on Saturday, May 30, Gameti RCMP received a call for service that a man may have gone through the ice on Rae Lake.

A search was managed by the NT RCMP Search Manager, with Police Dog Services and Forensic Identification Services assisting.

NT RCMP attended by helicopter, and located a hole in the lake ice and a toboggan near the hole.

RCMP, with the assistance of community members, located the deceased man submerged in water.

The deceased man was removed from the water and has been transported to the NWT Coroner Services.

"Our thoughts are with the loved ones of this man, who tragically lost his life to the ice and water conditions of our Northern lakes" states Staff Sergeant Ken Beard, South District Advisory NCO.

The RCMP is assisting NWT Coroner Services with the Coroner's investigation. The Chief Coroner has ordered a post mortem examination.

The break up conditions on our waterways can be challenging, and RCMP would like to remind travellers to be cautious on any frozen ice and open water.

The RCMP thanks the community members for their assistance.
