Man charged with arson following fire at Codiac Detachment

A Moncton man has been charged in connection to a fire that was deliberately set at the Codiac RCMP Detachment in Moncton, N.B.

On January 4, 2020, around 2:50 a.m., members of the Codiac detachment noticed a man in the vestibule of the detachment. A fire was started, and the man then fled the scene. An RCMP officer was able to quickly extinguish the fire. No one was injured.

Shortly after 6:30 a.m., the same morning, Codiac RCMP received a report of threats being made outside a residence on John Street. The suspect matched the description of the man in the vestibule of the Codiac detachment. Police attended John Street and arrested a 46-year-old man.

Joseph Jude (Joey) Gallant was charged with failing to appear in court and was remanded into custody by way of a tele-remand.

On January 6, 2020, he appeared in Moncton Provincial Court and was charged with the following additional charges:

  • arson
  • two counts of uttering threats
  • two counts of assaulting a peace officer
  • resisting arrest

Gallant was also charged with uttering threats and mischief on an unrelated matter.

He was sent for a 30-day psychological evaluation. He is scheduled to appear in Moncton Provincial Court on February 3, 2020, at 1:30 p.m.
