Hopedale RCMP arrests man following an aggravated assault

An 18-year-old Hopedale man was arrested by Hopedale RCMP following an investigation into a violent assault that left another man with serious injuries.

On May 11, 2020, at approximately 4:15 p.m., Hopedale RCMP received a report that a man was murdered at a residence in the community. Police attended and discovered the man was seriously injured and unresponsive but was alive. He was taken from the residence for urgent medical treatment.

Police identified Daniel Onalik as being involved in the assault and arrested him a short time later, outside the residence, without incident.

The victim was transported to the Health Sciences Centre in St John's and is being treated for a number of serious injuries.

Police charged Onalik with aggravated assault and he remains in custody at this time. He will attend court on May 19, 2020, for the purpose of a bail hearing.

The investigation, involving RCMP officers from Hopedale Detachment, the General Investigation Section and Forensic Identification Services, is continuing.
