A 43-year-old man originally from Val-d'Amour, N.B., has plead guilty to charges in connection with the homicide of 71-year-old Lucille Maltais.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred on October 22, 2016, when members of the Campbellton RCMP were called to a house fire on rue Melanson, after firefighters discovered the body of a woman inside the home. The victim was identified as 71-year-old Lucille Maltais. The investigation determined that the fire had been deliberately set and her death was deemed a homicide.

On May 22, 2019, as a result of a joint operation between the New Brunswick RCMP and the British Columbia RCMP, 42-year-old Charles Alex Maltais was arrested in Richmond, B.C. He was charged with second-degree murder and arson and was remanded into custody.

On December 21, 2020, Charles Alex Maltais appeared in Campbellton Provincial Court and plead guilty to one count of manslaughter and one count of arson. He is scheduled to return to court on February 19, 2021, for his sentencing.
